Chief Architect X18 brings a long list of updates, but a feature list alone does not tell a residential designer, architect, or contractor whether the upgrade will actually save time.

If the plan suddenly becomes responsive, a material or pattern is likely creating excessive processing demand. Pattern-from-texture settings, especially on detailed stone or similar surfaces, can generate a large number of lines.

Important: This is a diagnostic test, not a cleanup operation. Do not save over the production file after merging the materials.

Test whether a fixture or furnishing is causing the slowdown

Create a temporary schedule that includes fixtures and furnishings, using quantity as the key column. Select the applicable schedule rows, convert the objects into an architectural block, and turn that block off in the 3D view.

If performance improves, the problem is likely a high-detail object within that category. From there, narrow the search until the offending symbol is identified.

Dan Baumann also recommended a spatial version of the same test: work in a copy, remove one floor or one area at a time, and retest. When the problem disappears, the search has been narrowed to a manageable part of the model.

Separate software problems from hardware problems

X18 moves system information to Help > System Information, where users can review more than graphics-card data alone. This gives a designer or support professional a faster way to assess the overall machine, driver details, and whether the workstation itself may be contributing to poor performance.

The panel also cautioned against assuming that the newest graphics driver is automatically the best driver for every Chief Architect version. Compatibility can vary by version and system, so confirm current Chief Architect guidance before updating or rolling back a production workstation.

Earlier workflows allowed users to pin a project. X18 also allows individual files within that project to be pinned, making it easier to keep the current plan, layout, or latest version at the top of a long list.

This is particularly useful when a project contains:

  • Multiple plan revisions
  • Several layouts and supporting files
  • Archived concepts that must remain accessible
  • Team members who need to identify the active production file quickly

The panel noted one limitation in the version they tested: a pin might not remain attached when a project is exported and imported. Teams should confirm that behavior in their current X18 build rather than relying on the pin as the only version-control signal.

Save distributed paths to the library

X18 can save a distributed path, along with its associated object and spacing, to the user library. Rene identified landscaping as an immediate use case: a commonly used hedge or row of shrubs can be configured once and reused instead of rebuilt for every plan.

The same idea can support:

  • Repeated landscape plantings
  • Linear lighting layouts
  • Fence or post arrangements
  • Other evenly spaced objects used across multiple projects

Disable wall-end auto-connect when precision matters

By editing a wall intersection and disabling auto-connect at the relevant wall end, users can preserve conditions that Chief would otherwise pull back together. The panel demonstrated how this can help when:

Materials identified as insulation continue to use Chief's insulation representation, so different insulation types may require explicit notes or selective manual adjustment. The panel cautioned against changing assembly definitions merely to force a preferred graphic if that change could interfere with downstream energy-analysis workflows.

The template lesson behind the feature

The software improvement is only half the opportunity. The real leverage comes from setting up the display layers, fills, wall definitions, and saved plan views before the next deadline.

Site and Elevation Control: A Cleaner Terrain Reference Workflow

The panel also explored changes to grade and terrain referencing in X18. The elevation-reference setting is now accessible through plan defaults, making it easier to coordinate story-pole dimensions with the chosen reference.

Users can also select a terrain, turn off the automatic reference, display a movable surface reference point, and position that point where the site relationship matters most.

A practical garage workflow

John Schrader described a straightforward use case:

  • Move the terrain reference point to the front of the garage.
  • Relate the surface elevation to the garage-floor height.
  • Account for the driveway thickness or its intended projection above the terrain.
  • Use that controlled reference to bring the driveway and garage floor together accurately.

This replaces a more cumbersome trial-and-error process with a visible, movable control point. For sloped sites, lowered garages, and projects using real-world elevations, that can make site modeling substantially easier to understand.

Framing Control: Joist Direction With More Authority

X18 expands what can be controlled through joist-direction lines. In addition to direction, the panel demonstrated that a localized joist specification can override the room-level framing setup, including joist type and size for a defined area.

That gives residential designers greater control over plans with:
