I grew up in a small town of 3500, and it's nice to still have roots there. It was a great place to grow up, and I enjoyed the freedom we had as kids. It seemed like I knew everyone. That small town mentality has followed me throughout my life; I’m always working to foster community wherever I go. I love bringing people together in groups where we can work together, learn from each other and become lifelong friends.
One of the best things I've done for my business in the past four years has been hosting the annual International Builders Show event. I rent a house, fill it with clients and bring them all together over a week of training, networking and participating in a show.
But, something else has happened over that week that I didn’t anticipate: friendships! Some of my best friends in the world today were cultivated at these events. And not just by me, but between the other attendees. Some of these people are even working together on projects, advising each other and going out of their way to visit one another.
These experiences have been truly inspirational and life-changing and that is exactly why I've decided to stop doing training "classes.” These “classes” were impersonal and we were always stuck in a conference room; talk about uninspiring. From now on, I'm going to focus on training “events” like the International Builders Show; not only are they fun, but they’re way more helpful for builders.
